Belconnen Community Service Inc.

Migrant settlement

The Belconnen Community Service employs a Community Settlement Worker to assist newly arrived migrants and refugees to adjust to their life in Australia, re-establish their independence and integrate into the broader community.

A range of services is provided to our client group, such as emotional support, referral, advocacy, youth services and information about other services. Clients are also helped with accessing Centrelink, ACT Housing and other service providers, including Belconnen Community Service programs and activities. Issues discussed with the Community Settlement Worker are treated as strictly confidential.

For people who have limited English proficiency, we use the telephone interpreter service (TIS).

The Community Settlement Scheme is free of charge and is accessible to humanitarian entrants and migrants who have arrived in Australia in the previous 5 years and live in the North Canberra/Goulburn region.

English conversation

English Conversation group sessions are held every Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon during school terms and the cost is free. The purpose of the conversation group is to help people improve their listening and speaking skills, gain information, make new friends and, importantly, alleviate isolation.

People with young children can have them cared for at the Ginninderra Early Childhood Centre, located in the Belconnen Community Centre.

For further information about the Community Settlement Scheme please phone 6264 0200 between 9 am – 5 pm weekdays.
