Behaviour
Support Unit Early Intervention Program
A free and confidential service for families and childcare programs
with children 0–16 years
Children can be smart, loving, cooperative, fun, playful… and
they generally behave well when they feel connected to others,
feel good about themselves, have their basic needs met and understand
what is expected of them. However, children are individuals and
sometimes need different input from those who care for them to
help them develop physical, intellectual, emotional and social
skills.
When would a child need behaviour support?
All children misbehave sometimes! However, children, parents and
childcare workers may need support when:
- difficult behaviours become constant
- it is hard to notice or remember a time when the child
could listen and behave differently
- behaviour is hurting the child or those around them
- the behaviour is preventing the child or other children
from learning
- the behaviour is causing undue stress in the child’s
life, the family or the childcare program
- the behaviour is interrupting the child’s ability
to form good relationships with siblings, peers or others
